The reconstruction of the Sándor Hevesi Theatre
According to plans, the building of the Sándor Hevesi Theatre and the Griff Puppet Theatre is to be rebuilt
After long preparatory work, a government decision has been reached on the complete renovation of the building housing the Sándor Hevesi Theatre (https://www.hevesisandorszinhaz.hu/) and the Griff Puppet Theatre (https://griffbabszinhaz.hu/) in Zalaegerszeg. Two Governmental Decisions appeared in the Hungarian Gazette; the first one selected this renovation project to be part of the contract signed with Zalaegerszeg within the framework of the Modern Cities Program, and the other awarded a subsidy of HUF 255m to the local government for project preparation and the preparation of the building permit and final construction drawings.
The Sándor Hevesi Theatre has been operating in the building standing on Kosztolányi Street (today on József Ruszt Square, named after the theatre’s first director) since 1983, which building previously housed the county cultural centre in the 1950s. The building was last renovated in 2000 with construction works focusing on the auditorium and the spaces open to visitors. The auditorium was furnished with 400 seats and fitted out with a box circle. Since the backstage areas remained unaffected by the changes implemented two decades ago, they have become out-of-date and worn out by now, so complete renovation has become acute.
The renovation will not only affect the building, but the József Ruszt Square and the actors’ quarters too.
The engineering facilities, doors and windows, electric devices and wiring, light and sound technology are going to be replaced, a revolving stage constructed, passenger and freight lifts fitted, the square and the actors’ quarters renovated etc.
